New Hampshire Supreme Court Strikes Down Voting Law

The New Hampshire Supreme Court last week struck down a Republican-backed law that opponents argued made it harder for college students to vote, unanimously upholding the ruling of a trial court in finding that the law violates the state constitution.

The Supreme Court ruled Friday that the 2017 law, SB 3, which established new requirements for documenting proof of domicile and imposed civil or criminal penalties for violations, “imposes unreasonable burdens on the right to vote.” The court also found that “the State failed to carry its burden to demonstrate that SB 3 is substantially related to an important governmental objective.”
